Do I need to drain my portable air conditioner?

In most cases, your portable air conditioner will not need to be drained.  Edgestar, Avallon and Koldfront portable air conditioners use a condensation exhaust system to expel water vapor collected during the dehumidifying/cooling process.  This moisture is released through the exhaust hose along with hot exhaust air.

In extremely humid conditions, however, the water collected during this process cannot be exhausted quickly enough and may fill the internal water reservoir. When this occurs, the unit will automatically shutoff to avoid overflowing the internal tank.  Your specific unit may display an error code, alarm or indicator light when this condition occurs.  When this situation does occur you will need to drain the internal water tank.  Each specific model has its own instructions for draining this internal tank however the basic steps detailed below will work for all models:

To drain internal water tank:

  1. Find a drain pan or bucket or move the unit to a location where it can be drained into a sink.
  2. Locate the drain plug on the back or side of the unit.
  3. Remove the drain plug and rubber stopper to drain the water tank.

**Please note: Once the drain plug is removed, water will begin to drain freely.

To setup for continuous (gravity) drainage:

  1. Follow the above procedures to drain the unit initially.
  2. Measure the drain port opening and find a hose that is the correct width or thread type to secure to the drainage port of the unit.
  3. Locate a hose that will provide a water-tight fit. In certain cases a standard garden hose fitting will work.  Additionally, most hardware stores should have a hose type that will work for your unit.
  4. Route your drain hose to a suitable drainage location.  Please keep in mind that with a continuous drainage setup water will only drain through the hose by way of gravity, i.e. downhill.
